So after the container debacle we decided on a new option to move the containers out of the UN base, cut a path through the undergrowth around the side of the base to a much larger (wider) gate. We started early to try and get ahead of the heat, but by 8 it was already 27˚C so we just got stuck in. By 9 ish we were joined by 5 guys from ‘streetheartshaiti’ a program for adolescent boys and young men, to help them get off the streets. They were well into it and by noon we had cleared the 100 metres to the gate. By this point I was blowing though so quite enjoyed the break to get lunch for them. We chatted over lunch and with my basic creole worked out that three of them combined were my age. A sobering thought. See the video I took on the day.
After lunch I went down to the hospital for more punishment; putting order into the chaos of our current wheelchair storage. We just had a whole bunch of them in multiple sizes haphazardly stacked in the corner. At least now we can get to every size without too much stress, but if I wasn’t tired already, I was absolutely wacked by now. I don’t know how many bottles of drink I went through but I didn’t need the loo; my clothes were soaked with sweat. So I headed back home to shower, looking forward more than ever to a cold shower.
