Easter Weekend, as in the UK there are Bank Holidays on both Friday and Monday. It’s quiet at the Disability Centre, all the staff have gone home. I head into town, Yumbe, to find a Catholic Church for the Service at 3. Google maps helps a bit, but it is about half a mile out! In the end a local helps me out.
As you can see, the church is not quiet finished, but it is very full. The service is a mixture of English and dialect. Lugbara I think. Not that I would recognise or understand it, but the boy on the pew in front of me has a Service book titled in English but with “Lugbara” written below it…? The multi-language confuses me a little; the sermon is in dialect, but the notices at the end are in English.
The singing is also a mixture of English and dialect. But helpfully the words are projected onto the back wall, which is really nice. At one stage there are even different verses depending on the signing voice… Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. I guess that was more for the choir than the congregation! And there is a lot of singing, especially during the veneration of the cross. People just seem to keep joining the queue; I think there were probably more people outside than in.
New PB. Yes, 2 hours 48 minutes. Quite some Service!
