wheelchair fitting

I think the saddest task I have, but by far the most rewarding, is wheelchair fitting.  I do all the children, who clearly have mental as well as physical disabilities.  It takes about an hour with the chairs we have as they are so adjustable.  But they are not sophisticated and so adjustments involve lots of unscrewing bolts and tightening (and repeat).

The children are all so beautiful, and surprisingly tactile given their other health issues.  They are also incredibly patient.  Of course, there are lots of tears; strange people (‘blancs’ at that) trying to manipulate them, get them into the chair, then out again, strapping them down, pushing their legs and feet into new positions.

I would find it frustrating, but show them a smile, a tickle a silly noise; you inevitably get a smile.  And from those that have a bit more awareness the depth of the smile is so warm and beautiful, it would bring a tear to a glass eye…
